Chapter 19

Malcolm and Katrice had not spoken about the kiss and must have silently decided that they never would because it had been several months and neither had mentioned it. When Katrice arrived at the St. Louis Bread Company, Malcolm had already ordered for them both and was seated on the restaurant’s patio. After she was seated, he started to go over the bids with her. Malcolm was so busy explaining the bid process to Katrice that he had not noticed that she was crying. He took Katrice’s hand and asked, “What’s wrong, baby?” Katrice looked up and stared into Malcolm’s eyes for a few minutes before he spoke again:

“Trust or comfort?”

“What?” Katrice asked sounding confused.

Malcolm smiled, “it is the way you are looking at me. You get this look when you are excited about Legacy but this one is different. You are looking for something. Is it trust or comfort? Katrice swallowed her tears and looked down at the bids; “Malcolm, I know you have worked hard on this but I just cannot do this now. I do not have the money to start this project and I don’t have a way to get it.” Malcolm handed Katrice his handkerchief and said, “You told me you wanted to sell your house.” I did…” Katrice began. She took a deep breath and began to speak with Malcolm about her marriage. She told him bits and pieces and less intimate details than she had told Sister Onessa but enough for him to know her and Kevin’s had not been a happy marriage and that she was not sure where it was going but divorce had totally shocked her. Malcolm was walking Katrice to her car by the time she finished talking to him about her marriage and pending divorce.

Malcolm leaned against Katrice’s shiny black Lexus and touched her hair. He looked at her intently. “So, is that a spiritual ritual or something? Your only taking your hair down for him. I know Bev says that the only time she has seen you with your hair down is when you were with him.” Katrice opened her door and looked at Malcolm. She paused for a minute and then began to answer him; “I can’t say it’s exactly a spiritual ritual. I just knew that I wanted to please my husband. You have heard the story about Sampson’s strength being in his hair and about the hair being a woman’s crown of glory. Well, I take that to heart. That’s why I don’t chemically process my hair and it’s also why it is always in a ponytail or bun when I’m away from home. I just felt like it was strictly for the enjoyment of my husband. Nobody taught me that, it is just something that I wanted between him and me. As far as the washing of his feet, it is a sign of humility. I didn’t care what he had done or whey he had done it.
